Fast Empty Folder Finder
This is the online documentation for Fast Empty Folder Finder (referred to as FEFF in this document).
The most recent version is 22.214.171.124. This update features generous speed improvements throughout. From now on, Fast Empty Folder Finder will be available optimized for each of the most common .NET Frameworks. This is to help maximize the 'portability' of these applications on Windows based systems.

If this is the first time you have run FEFF
, then you should start off by specifying a few things. First is your scan locations. Click the 'Scan Locations" button to display the Scan Locations dialog. From there, click Browse For A Folder, and select the folders you wish to add to the scan locations list. Optionally, manually type in the folder in the text box below the Browse For A Folder button.
Once you are done managing your scan locations, click the OK button to save the list and return to FEFF.
If you want to exclude specific folders from the empty folder scan
, you can add those folders to the exclusion list. Access the exclusion list by clicking
Options > Exclusions
in the main menu. The Exclusions list is used just like the scan location dialog. Any empty folders found in a excluded folder is ignored, however, empty folders within sub folders of that exclusion are not ignored.
If you want to count a folder as empty when it contains just specific files
, you can add those files to the ignored list. Access the ignored list by clicking
Options > Ignored
in the main menu. If a folder just contains files that are in the ignored items list, that folder is considered empty. For example, Windows XP based systems frequently have folders that are empty except for remnants from when that folder contained other files. The file Thumbs.db for example, means there was images once in that folder since its a 'thumbnail database'. Right now, you must be exact with file naming so there is no confusion. Ignored files are deleted if they appear in a folder that would without them, be empty.
When you are ready to start your scan
, simply press the Start Scan button. The scan will begin, and within a few moments you can begin to manage your empty folders.
When the scan is complete
, you will either be shown a list of empty folder that were found, or a message telling you that no empty folders were found. In the later case, you can close the application, or click the New Scan button to perhaps choose a different location or change your settings. If empty folders were found, I urge you to preview your empty folders and verify their emptiness.
To verify emptiness of a folders
, make sure the Explorer Panel is visible. This panel is below the empty folder list, and displays the contents of whatever folder is selected in the list. The path of the folder in view is also listed in the info bar above the Explorer Panel. If you have ignored files, they may appear in some of the empty folders previews, otherwise, the Explorer Panel will show as empty. Alternately, you can right click on the empty folder in the list and "View In Explorer" to open that folder in its own window.
When you decide you want to delete a folder, click its check box to checked. You can also do this by clicking your spacebar to toggle the checked state of the selected empty folders. Then, to delete all of the checked folders, click the Delete Checked drop down button. It will present two options to you. The first is Recycle (slow), and Delete Permanently (fast). Recycling will send the deleted folders to your recycle bin where they can be restored if required. However, this method is slow. If you have hundreds of folders to delete, it can be a time consuming process. Deleting Permanently, you have a very fast delete function, but no way to recover the deleted folders (and contents).
When your done deleting the empty folders you have chosen, you can simply exit the application, or click New Scan to start over.
For help or information, click the Help or About menu items in the main menu along the top of the application.
FEFF has a main menu, a toolbar, and two primary panels. The Toolbar contains all functions required to run the application. More advanced options are available via the main menu along the top of the application. The results list offers right click functionality.
FEFF runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It is available as a 32bit executable only. It is available optimized for .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0, .NET 3.5, and .NET 4.0 to help ensure its 'portability' on those three Windows Operating Systems.
For the best performance, do not choose the root of your drive (i.e C:\). Scanning from the root will work, but it will seriously impact the scan time considering many systems will have tens of thousands of folders. Your best bet is to be deliberate in your selection of folders to scan. For example, choose My Music, or My Documents, or Program Files.
Close other Explorer instances. If you have a empty folder open in Explorer (external from FEFF), that folder cannot be deleted and you will receive an error.
Check back frequently for updates. The version of FEFF is available via its About menu. If you would like to be notified of updates, feel free to subscribe to the RSS feed at my website. No need to worry, I don't make smalltalk or nonsense posts, so any RSS update will be regarding a software release or update.
